Obesity And Infertility |

Recent studies have linked obesity and infertility. Australian researchers studied 3,500 women who were very obese and found that they were half as likely to conceive when compared to women of normal weight. Not only did these women have trouble conceiving naturally, they also had problems becoming pregnant when they received fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization. Dr Michael Davies, one of the authors of the study, told BBC News Online: 'The distinctive characteristic is that when they come for treatment they have conspicuous reproductive problems." He said doctors could help to some degree, such as by restoring menstruation, but added: "There is really a quite strong effect of obesity which affects the effectiveness of treatment." Another obesity and infertility study in Sweden found that even when controlling for other health factors, those women who were obese had much greater fertility problems. What is obese? The study considered any woman with a body mass index or BMI of over 35 to be obese. If your BMI is between 25 and 29, you are simply overweight. If your BMI is over 40, you are in morbidly obese category. Although we are not sure exactly of the relationship between obesity and infertility, obesity is also well known to be associated with insulin resistance which is associated with infertility. Even where pregnancy does occur, women who are obese have a higher incidence of early pregnancy loss and spontaneous abortions. Women who are obese or overweight also tend to have irregular menstrual cycles. In fact, the percentage of overweight women who suffer from anovulation, which is the absence of ovulation, is greater than than of women of normal weight. Anovulation is definitely a problem for anyone trying to conceive. In addition to triggering menstrual and ovulation problems, being overweight can also disturb the lining of the uterus making it inhospitable for the embryo to develop. Obesity is a state of a person where this individual is overweight. It is usually caused by overeating but can sometime be caused by hormonal imbalances in the body. In addition to infertility, the obese person also has a greater tendency to be susceptible to many other diseases such as high cholesterols levels, high blood pressure, and cancer. To improve your chances of conception, work with your doctor to come up with a weight loss plan that you can live with. The plan should include both dietary changes and exercising. If you are still suffering fertility problems after losing weigh, it is time to see a fertility expert to track down the cause of your problem.
